Meet the Instructors

Tyler Sigman – Head Instructor

Tyler Sigman is the head instructor and founder of Omaha Kunst des Fechtens, a Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) school focused on the preservation and practice of medieval martial systems. He began his formal study of the Art in August 2015 under the guidance of Michaelangelo Reina, and has since dedicated himself to the in-depth study of the Germanic martial tradition—particularly the longsword, messer, and rondel dagger. Tyler is known for his disciplined yet accessible teaching style, blending practical technique with historical context. His approach is holistic, emphasizing the importance of understanding the mindset and philosophy behind the source material as much as the physical movements themselves.

Through meticulous research and comparative study of primary historical texts, Tyler seeks to uncover the deeper truths within the Art, believing that martial arts are not only physical disciplines but also intellectual and philosophical pursuits. He regularly participates in seminars, workshops, and events across the HEMA community, and is continually refining his interpretation and application of the historical sources. Whether training students or conducting research, Tyler’s goal remains the same: to honor the tradition, understand the past, and inspire future generations of martial artists.

Tom Shirazi – Rottmeister (Squad Leader)

Tom Shirazi is a Rottmeister (squad leader) at Omaha Kunst des Fechtens, bringing over a two decades of experience in martial arts to his study of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). With a background in Shan Tao Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Silat, Arnis, and Sambo, Tom specializes in joint locks, grappling, and traditional weaponry, including the Dao, Jian, staff, and spear.

Drawn to HEMA by his lifelong interest in weaponry, Tom now focuses on Blossfechten (unarmored combat) and assists with the school’s Ringen (grappling) instruction. His diverse experience and disciplined approach make him a valuable leader and mentor within the school, bridging the gap between Eastern and Western martial traditions.

Ralph Hill – Rottmeister (Squad Leader)

Ralph Hill is a squad leader at Omaha Kunst des Fechtens, where he began his Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) training under Tyler Sigman in January 2021. Specializing in the longsword and rapier, Ralph combines historical martial principles with a sharp technical edge developed through both modern and classical fencing disciplines. After beginning his HEMA journey, Ralph expanded his martial education by training with The Musketeer Fencing Club, where he studied the classical European fencing arts. This additional training brought depth and refinement to his swordsmanship, enriching his interpretations of historical techniques with a disciplined, classical perspective.

Ralph is recognized for his thoughtful and precise approach to the Art. He is a committed practitioner and instructor who values both physical skill and historical insight, bringing clarity and structure to his lessons while remaining rooted in the rich traditions of European martial heritage.

Michaelangelo Reina – Club Founder

Michaelangelo “Angel” Reina is the founder of Omaha Kunst des Fechtens. He began his study of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) at the Academy of Arms in Burkbank in California before making the move to Capital Kunst des Fechtens in Alexandria, Virginia, with Jake Norwood as his instructor. Angel created Omaha KDF under the xKDF network to promote and encourage the growth of Kunst des Fechtens and well as the HEMA community in the Midwest region of the United States. His knowledge of the art is mainly focused on the Longsword, Ringen, dagger, and messer within early Liechtenauer tradition. Additionally he is a student and practitioner of English and Spanish Saber, Destreza, and Iberian Montante.
